Virtual Learning Academy Charter SchoolIn only five years, enrollment at the Virtual Learning Academy Charter School has increased from 700 to 15,500, and is larger than many of the state’s school districts.

Those numbers are not as simple as they seem; an “enrollment” at the online charter school, for example, does not necessarily equal one student, but instead, a completed half-credit course.

Still, it’s a growth pattern that VLACS CEO Steve Kossakoski said has been beyond his imagination.

“The way we look at it, it’s not so much about how many students we get, it’s more about what programs can we deliver to students that can help them,” he said. “There are a number of things that will happen down the line.”

Kossakoski hopes to see that growth continue and said financial constraints that have hit many charter schools recently have had less of an impact on the online school.
